about

BINGO049

Family Selection Box make a leisurely return with an EP that began life as a television theme tune and grew into something else. Recorded in Pitsmoor in Sheffield primarily on the piano in Tom's living room, 'At Your Own Leisure' sees FSB at its most introspective without losing the wry humour and knack for a hook that's always been there.

Tom says:

‘At Your Own Leisure’ was actually written as a request from a dear friend Jack Hartley who was making a TV pilot sitcom about a bunch of complex characters who frequented and worked in a provincial northern leisure centre. He wanted a theme tune but I got a bit carried away and wrote a full song. It’s about championing the ‘leisure’ element of a leisure centre.

“Rewind” was written as a stream of consciousness and self reflection about trying to be in touch with emotions more through the metaphor of using a remote control. I expect a bit like that Adam Sandler film I’ve never seen called Click.

“Renewal Time” is a heart on sleeve song about the trials and failures of customer support lines. My failed attempts to get my car insurance down or switching phone lines. You don’t get that time back.

“Will they publish my work” is about me coming to terms with accepting that with art it’s about the process and not the result. I’ve obviously known it for a long time but it’s a healthy reminder that it’s ok just to make stuff even if the hit rate is low.

“Substance For Sadness” is actually about 17 years old. I wrote this with my mates Andy, Matty and Chris in our band called “How’s My Pop”. The band name was bad (my fault!) but we got to do some fun stuff and we had a lovely time together in our formative indie rock band. This version is a reimagined version of something we recorded on a portastudio all those years. I don’t have the recording and I just rewrote the lyrics as I couldn’t remember it.
